SERVICES: Pre-pregnancy counselling
What is Pre-pregnancy counselling? Pre-pregnancy counselling is actually pre-conception counselling.
Many women see an obstetrician only when they test positive with a urine pregnancy kit. This is all right if they have no medical or health issues.
However, women who have risk factors, health issues, genetic issues or other concerns are encouraged to consult an obstetrician before getting pregnant.
If these issues can be identified, treated or optimized, then the pregnancy will be smoother.
During the visit, do let your obstetrician know if you have any medical issues like diabetes, hypertension or previous surgery. You and your partner/husband’s family history is important too. For example, there may be a family history of genetic conditions for which prenatal diagnosis is possible.
Share with your obstetrician the medication you are currently taking. Some medicines can be harmful in pregnancy and should be reviewed when trying for a baby.
A healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet and exercise is important when planning for a pregnancy. Smoking should be stopped as it increases the risk for pregnancy complications like miscarriage, preterm labour and small babies. Folic acid supplements are advised when trying for a baby as they reduce brain and spinal cord abnormalities in the baby.
It will also be good to share your vaccination history with your obstetrician as you may wish to consider some additional vaccinations before getting pregnant.
what our patients say
I had an extremely pleasant pregnancy journey with Dr Judy Wong. She went through the process in detail which was very helpful as it was our first baby. The time allocated for each of our visits was more than sufficient for me to ask questions and go through the details.
The clinic staff was super! Kind, accommodating and very helpful. -- Hosokai
